I Started My Career as an Artist Who Was Told by My Father That I Had No Marketable Skills…

I figured out how to build a multi-million business anyway and have shown over 16,000 students how to succeed online — many of whom also felt like they had “no marketable skills” or were told they couldn’t do it.

As the founder of Live Your Message & Creator of The Experience Formula, I get people so excited about changing their lives that they stop dreaming and start doing.

I do this by creating what I call “Experience Products” (instead of more traditional online courses and information-based products).

An Experience Product is an entirely new framework for creating online courses that combine the most powerful elements of gamification, behavioral design, adult learning psychology, and innovative curriculum design to create an engaging experience that gets people “hooked” on taking action and getting results.

This approach is so effective that we have some of the highest success rates in the industry!

I’ve shared my new approach to product creation at top industry events

including Mindvalley Momentum, Evercoach Summit, LaunchCon, MFA Live, and Traffic & Conversion Summit.

I’ve also become the “go-to”
course creation expert

for dozens of industry leaders, including Mary Morrissey, Vishen Lakhiani, JJ V irgin, John Assaraf, Josh Turner, Taki Moore and many others.

I received a BA from Brown University (in Modern Culture & Media and Visual Arts) and an MA from the Royal College of Art in Communication Art & Design.

I’ve also received countless awards and grants for my creative work from the National Foundation for Advancement in the Arts, the Faulkner Society, the British Standards Institute and many more.

I live in Austin, Texas with the love of my life Murray. He keeps me laughing all day long with his Australian sense of humor and we affectionately call each other “monkey.”

The Truth Behind Why I Started Live Your Message

Since I’m a firm believer in understanding why people do what they do, not just what they do, I wanted to share my story with you.

It’s a story that still feels a little raw and vulnerable for me to share… It’s the story of my very unlikely journey to be where I am today and the powerful clues your past can offer your future success…

All the challenges and experiences that you’ve had in your life have prepared you for this exact moment in time where you’re poised, ready and uniquely qualified to do what you’re here to do.

I hope you can see that the experiences I’ve had give me more credibility to do this work than any of my advanced degrees or any of the tens of thousands of entrepreneurs I’ve served, the tens of millions of dollars I’ve made through my business and the hundreds of millions my students, clients and customers have made. Or really anything else…

This is why this work is life and death to me.

10 Things You Probably Don’t Know About Me

I’m not a fan of traditional bios… since they’re all about what I’ve done and achieved. And while that’s a very important part of who I am, it’s not the whole truth…

I believe that who you are — and the life you live — is just as important as what you do… so I thought I’d share 10 things you probably don’t know about me…

I interviewed Snoop Dogg

in my past career as a documentary film director. He was high as a kite…

The day I graduated from Brown, I was wearing a flamboyant Egyptian wedding robe*

and marching in a pot and pan band when Bill Cosby* grabbed me out of the crowd, embraced me and planted a big kiss on my cheek. “That’s the spirit!” he said, then released me back into the parade down College Hill… That story only became sketchy 20 years later!

*In case you were wondering, I bought the robe from a transgender lady in the French Quarter. And Bill Cosby was there getting an honorary degree.

I biked down the Most Dangerous Road in the World in Bolivia

— often called the Death Road — which drops 3,900 feet from La Paz to Coroico. I’ve never said the word f*ck so many times in my life.

I once entered a pumpkin decorating contest…. and won!

My submission? Osama bin Pumpkin. I made his machine gun belt out of ziti.

My grandfather was in the Elephant Guard

That’s like the Thai Secret Service… only they rode elephants and fought with swords. Seriously! Bad ass is in my blood… 😉

Our family heirlooms include jewelry that once belonged to the Princess of Thailand.

My mom went to school in the Royal Palace to learn “how to be a woman.” She was forced to crawl past the adults when they were eating at the floor tables* and learn how to entertain men through conversation and music. She ran away 3 times in a rickshaw. Even though she used to tell me I couldn’t do the things my brother did because I was a girl, I know she’s proud of me today. * In Thai culture in the 1940’s and 50’s, children had to be at a lower level than adults at all times.

My dad was in the Peace Corps in 1968 under Sargent Shriver.

He was placed in a leper colony in Thailand. His role? Entertainment Director. He wasn’t very good at it. He tried to teach them how to play Steal the Bacon, but they couldn’t pick up the bacon.🤦‍♂

I have an island named after me!

In high school I spent a summer at my grandparents’ house in Wisconsin Rapids. That was the summer I decided to read Dostoyevsky’s Anna Karenina. Each morning I paddled out to a small island in the middle of the lake they lived on. I spent hours each day reading in a hammock. After a couple weeks, my grandfather — who built most of the town of Wisconsin Rapids — built me a small dock and hung a sign that said Marisa’s Island. Almost 30 years later it’s still there… and sometimes I feel like I’ve spent my whole life trying to get back to that island. Population 1.

I got fleas while traveling in the Ixil Triangle of Guatemala and sleeping in $3/night hotel rooms.

A shaman offered to rid me of them. His method? Spitting a mouthful of grain alcohol in my face. It didn’t work. 3 days later I checked myself into the hospital.

My husband Murray and
I were detained by the Russian government

for illegally trying to enter the country. I had to sign a 30-page confession before they released me.
